The KSO opens its 20th season with a comparison of two epic tales about powerful mystical rings. From 1848 -1874 composer/drammatist Richard Wagner brought about a seismic change in both music and opera with his four opera cycle Ring of the Nibelung. Some 90 years later J.R.R. Tolkien penned a three novel saga titled Lord of the Rings over a span of twelve years. Between 2000-2003 director Peter Jackson together with film score composer Howard Shore brought the Tolkien adventure to the big screen.

The KSO has long sought to find those universally common denominators to which its audience can relate and find fascination. Combining the authentic music, cartoon video and live original voice talent for the Steven Speilberg and Warner Bros cartoon collaborations of the mid 1990s, (Animaniacs) here is Rob Paulsen, the KSO and Yakko Warner (on screen) with the “Nations of the World” (from the 5/15/10 KSO program Looney Tuneage).

The KSO often embarks on musical archeological digs to find interesting and nostalgic music. The decision to recreate Spike Jones’ musical mayhem and classical parodies of the ’40s and ’50s took Mr. Cassidy to Beverly Hills to meet Spike Jones Jr.

The result of that meeting, combined with finding percussionist / entertainer Carl Mack, and KSO arranger Terry LaBolt’s reconstructing parts from original music and rebuilding others, led to this impromptu performance at the Madison Theatre in Covington, KY.

From 1940-1960 various composers were commissioned to write 8-12 minute works for piano and orchestra to be featured within films. The most famous is the “Warsaw Concerto” of Addinsell, which was inserted into Dangerous Moonlight. Another included speaking and performing roles for great classical artists of the time like Arthur Rubenstein and Eugene Ormandy. Local pianists Edward Neeman, Steven Hinnenkamp, Marcus Küchle, and Scot Woolley will join the KSO for this lush season finale.
